Greek, an independent branch of the Indo-European language family, is spoken by about 13 million native speakers, mainly in Greece and Cyprus. It uses the Greek alphabet, one of the oldest writing systems still in use, with a history spanning over 3,000 years. Modern Greek, derived from Ancient Greek, features a relatively complex grammar with four cases for nouns, three genders, and verb conjugations that vary by tense, mood, and person. Its phonology includes distinct vowel sounds and stress placement. Greek vocabulary has significantly influenced Western languages, especially in science, philosophy, and literature, with terms like "democracy" and "philosophy." As the official language of Greece and Cyprus, Greek holds immense cultural and historical significance. Romanization is enabled for Greek on this platform in addition to the original script. Romanization is the representation of a non-Latin script language in the Latin alphabet to aid pronunciation and understanding for those unfamiliar with the original script.
