Welsh, a Brittonic Celtic language, is spoken by about 900,000 people, primarily in Wales and a small settlement in Argentina. It uses the Latin alphabet with distinctive double consonants like "dd," "ll," and "ff," and frequently employs circumflex accents (â, ê, î, ô, û, ŵ, ŷ) to indicate long vowels. Known for its melodic intonation and initial consonant mutations where the first letter of a word changes based on context, Welsh grammar features two grammatical genders (masculine and feminine) and a verb-subject-object (VSO) word order. Its vocabulary is rooted in Common Brittonic, with historical loanwords from Latin and more recent influences from English. As the official language of Wales, it is central to the nation’s identity and celebrated through the Eisteddfod festival. Welsh is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most successful examples of language revitalization.
